REMINISCENCE ROOM
Reminiscence Rooms have been traditionally usedto trigger memories in people who have long term health related memory issues. Whether it is Dementia, Alzheimers or brain trauma, there are many ways that loss of our short term or long term memory can affect us and familiar objects in a familiar setting can be beneficial. Here we step into a Caribbean Living room of the 1960s,an earlier time, to recall those memories that all too often seem lost. Even if you just enjoy the Retro styles and music, come help us relive the era.
WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP!We want to put on a Reminiscence Room for Black History Month 2024 with events, workshops and storytelling. Please help us do this by emailing us areas we could house this much loved installation to nubianglu@gmail.com

THE ROOM
THE WINDRUSH, BLACK HISTORY AND THE POWER OF MEMORIES.
Reminiscence Rooms are powerful tools for helping people recall their memories.
They allow individuals to become more confident and engaged in society.
As such bringing this event to London Boroughs seemed an ideal opportunity for us to share stories of yesteryear, reconnect with the community and
combat social isolation as well .
The Windrush Generation and their families have really experienced trauma in terms of their treatment by the British Government. Because of this we have decided to recognise their economic, social and cultural contribution
by supporting and creating a Caribbean Reminiscence Room and touring it throughout the Autumn and Black History Month to allow members of the Community - and our
Windrush Pioneers - to come forward and tell their Stories
in this safe and relaxing setting, to be archived for future Generations.
Nubian GLU
and Showpatrol
are touring this culturally specific Pop Up Space to allow Elders and other members of the community to have a place to enjoy a special period in time - in this case the 1960s to early 1970s when many of them would have first come to this strange land. We use the space as a way of connecting older members of the community to younger members as well as their family and carers who may want to engage with them on a deeper level using specially curated artefacts from that time.
The Caribbean Living Room also doubles up as a backdrop and workshop space for other events we plan to hold to include Screenings, Q&As and Creative Workshops. The Reminiscence Room is immersive and interactive
and can be brought to a Venue near you!

FAQS
What is a Reminiscence Room?
Reminiscence Rooms
are used to trigger memories in people who have long term health related memory issues. Whether it is Dementia or Alzheimers or something brought on by stress or trauma there are many ways that loss of our short term or long term memory can affect us and so it can often be beneficial to step into an earlier time to recall those memories that are sometimes lost.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, it does pay to book in advance, especially for the daily events which have only limited spaces.
How long do I get to spend in the room?
You have 2 hours to enjoy the experience however you can attend as often as you like. On quieter days -midweek - there is more flexibility to enjoy the space. Feel free to buy something vintage to take away with you from the Gift Shop out front.
How many people can take part in the reminiscence room at any one time?
Up to ten people can be in the room at any one time with two actually seated on the armchairs in the Living Room.
It is an authentic Living Room and the sizes are similar to a normal lounge area. For Screenings and events the space can hold 20 people which is why booking is essential.
What happens if I can't make it to the session or event I have booked?
We do operate a strict no refunds policy however if you bring your ticket to the venue you may be able to sell it beforehand. We are a charity and so we do not have the manpower to try and resell tickets on your behalf.
How much does it cost to get in?
The exhibition is free to get in and individual workshops vary from £5 to £10 depending with FREE FRIDAY Screenings and FREE Workshops available for some events.
